Syracuse rolls in season opener

Hakim Warrick had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the No. 6 Syracuse Orangemen to a 104-54 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears (0-1) on Thursday night at Syracuse, N.Y., in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Syracuse (1-0) will play Princeton (1-0) in the second round Friday night. The Tigers beat Bucknell 61-48 in the Carrier Dome earlier.

(12) Mississippi St. 53, Fairfield 49: At Birmingham, Ala., Ontario Harper scored 17 points and the Bulldogs (1-0) beat the Stags (0-1). The Bulldogs will play Birmingham-Southern (1-0), which beat Alabama A&M 79-69, in tonight’s second round of the Cancer Classic.

(24) Memphis 102, Savannah St. 40: At Memphis, Tenn., Rodney Carney scored 21 points and Memphis (1-0) had six players finish in double figures as it defeated Savannah (0-1). Memphis will play George Mason, which defeated Indiana-Purdue-Fort Worth 69-51, in the second round of the Cancer Classic Saturday night.

California 78, UC Riverside 61: At Berkeley, Calif., reserve David Paris had career-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds as the Golden Bears defeated the Highlanders. Cal freshman Eric Vierneisel had 12 points, making all four of his 3-point tries.

Women’s basketball

(3) LSU 81, Maine 50: At Baton Rogue, La., Seimone Augustus scored 17 points and third-ranked LSU opened the season with an 81-50 victory over Maine in the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic.
