Bulldogs beat Panthers, advance to semifinals

Winsome Frazier scored 18 points, including his team’s last 10 of the game as No. 12 Mississippi State defeated the Birmingham-Southern Panthers 55-48 in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday in the second round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Bulldogs (2-0) played their second game without preseason All-America Lawrence Roberts, who didn’t play because of a broken nose suffered last week in practice.

Birmingham-Southern (1-1) took its first lead at 38-37 midway through the second half, but Frazier scored 14 points over the last 10 minutes to help put away the game.

James Collins led Birmingham-Southern with 14 points.

(6) Syracuse 56, Princeton 45: At Syracuse, N.Y., Hakim Warrick scored 20 points and the Orangemen held the Tigers to five free throws over the final 8 minutes, 41 seconds in a victory. Syracuse (2-0) advanced to Thursday’s Coaches vs. Cancer Classic semifinals at New York’s Madison Square Garden against Mississippi State. Will Venable led the Tigers (1-1) with 17 points and six rebounds.

St. Mary’s 61, California 52: At Berkeley, Calif., E.J. Rowland had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and the Gaels defeated the Bears. The Gaels (2-0) also advanced to the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic semifinals at Madison Square Garden against the winner of the Memphis region, either George Mason or No. 24 Memphis, who play tonight. Jonathan Sanders had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Brett Collins added 15 points for the Gaels. Marquise Kately led California (1-1) with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Seimone Augustus scored 25 points, and No. 3 LSU won the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic title by defeating Arizona St. 65-54 in Baton Rogue, La. Emily Westerberg (Central Valley High) had 11 points and eight rebounds for Arizona St., Reagan Pariseau (CV) added five points and Aubree Johnson (Post Falls) contributed two more. … Mistie Williams and Monique Currie scored 20 points apiece, leading sixth-ranked Duke past Davidson 89-69 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at Durham, N.C. Wanisha Smith added 14 points for Duke. Brynn Kelly (Ferris) contributed two for Davidson. … Both Jessica Davenport and Ashley Allen scored six of their 17 points during a 17-0 first-half run in No. 10 Ohio State’s 89-41 win over Bowling Green in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at Columbus, Ohio. Caity Matter added 12 points for the Buckeyes. … Courtney LaVere scored 18 points and Meagan Duffy added 15 points and eight assists to lead No. 10 Notre Dame to a 92-73 victory over Illinois State in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at South Bend, Ind. … Shannon Hobson had a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for No. 24 Arizona in an 87-72 victory over Saint Mary’s in the first round of the Preseason Women’s NIT at Tucson, Ariz.
