Fresno State wins fifth straight game

Associated Press

Paul Pinegar threw three touchdown passes and Fresno State set an NCAA record by scoring two touchdowns in an 8-second span in its 62-28 victory over San Jose State on Saturday in San Jose, Calif.

Bryson Sumlin scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs (8-3, 5-3 WAC), who won their fifth straight.

Fresno State has outscored its opponents by 280-80 during the streak, and has surpassed 50 points for the fourth straight game for the first time in school history.

Lance Martin rushed for 162 yards and scored twice as the Spartans (2-9, 1-7) lost their seventh straight.

After Wendell Mathias scored on 2-yard run with 13:21 left in the half to make it 21-7, Jaron Fairman recovered an onside kick on the Spartans 33. Stephen Spach caught Pinegar’s pass on the next play to make it 28-7 at 13:13. Utah had the previous record with two scores in 10 seconds against Air Force in 1995.

South

Maryland 13, Wake Forest 7: At College Park, Md., Sam Hollenbach threw for 164 yards in his first college start as the Terrapins (5-6, 3-5 ACC) cranked up the defense to shut down the Demon Deacons (4-7, 1-7). Hollenbach, who spent most of the season as the third quarterback on the depth chart, went 16 for 27 with no interceptions. The sophomore started ahead of the ineffective Joel Statham and injured second-stringer Jordan Steffy.

Memphis 31, South Florida 15: At Tampa, Fla., DeAngelo Williams rushed for more than 200 yards for the fourth time in seven games, gaining a career-high 263 and scoring two touchdowns to lead the Tigers (8-3, 5-3 CUSA) to a victory over the Bulls (4-6, 3-5). Williams hiked his Conference USA single-season rushing record to 1,828 yards and finished the Tigers’ regular season with a nation-leading 19 TDs, as well as nine games with at least 100 yards on the ground.

Mississippi 20, Mississippi State 3: At Oxford, Miss., backup quarterback Robert Lane had 205 total yards with a touchdown pass and a touchdown run as the Rebels (4-7, 3-5 SEC) cruised past the Bulldogs (3-8, 2-6). Lane was 10 of 17 passing for 108 yards and rushed for 97 yards for the Rebels, who won the Battle for the Golden Egg.

North Carolina State 52, East Carolina 14: At Charlotte, N.C., Jay Davis threw three touchdown passes and the Wolfpack (5-6) allowed only 145 yards in a dominating victory over the Pirates (2-9). The Wolfpack blocked a punt for a score, returned an onside kick for another and had an interception return for a TD nullified by an inadvertent whistle. Davis also scored the first rushing touchdown of his career.

Southern Mississippi 26, Alabama-Birmingham 21: At Hattiesburg, Miss., Dustin Almond completed 10 of 14 passes and threw for two touchdowns in a 17-point third quarter to help the Golden Eagles (6-4, 5-3 CUSA) capture that elusive sixth victory to become bowl-eligible with a win over the Blazers (7-4, 5-3). It was almost a must-win game for Southern Miss because a loss would have forced the Golden Eagles to have to beat No. 4 California next week to qualify for their third straight bowl game.

Southwest

Tulane 35, Texas Christian 31: At Fort Worth, Texas, freshman Richard Irvin, making his first start, threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game with 48 seconds left to give the Green Wave (5-5, 3-4 CUSA) a victory over the Horned Frogs (5-6, 3-5). Irvin’s 12-yard pass to Chris Bush in the closing seconds capped a 99-yard drive for Tulane. Irvin, filling in for the injured Lester Ricard, finished 22 of 37 for 282 yards with TD passes of 3, 3, 11, 25 and 12 yards. The 10-play winning drive gave Tulane its first lead and came after TCU was on the verge of putting the game away. Leading 31-28 with 3:57 left, TCU failed to convert a 4th-and-goal from the Tulane 2-yard line when Robert Merrill was stopped on the 1.
