Jerry Pettigrew

Eugene, Ore.

Funeral Mass for Jerry Munro Pettigrew, 88, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Becket Church in Veneta, Ore. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pettigrew died Wednesday.

He was born in North Battlefield, Saskatchewan, and in 1934 graduated from North Battleford High School. He played for the Canadian national championship with the North Battleford junior hockey team in the early 1930s, and played in the Allen Cup (Canadian National Championship) finals in 1937 with the North Battleford Beavers, the team he was inducted with into the North Battleford Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

From 1937 to 1940 Mr. Pettigrew was a star hockey player for the Gonzaga University Bulldogs.

During World War II he worked in the office of a Canadian fish cannery that supplied the troops and in 1942 married Kathleen Koenigs.

In the 1940s and 1950s he officiated for Western International Hockey League games in Spokane.

Mr. Pettigrew was personnel and credit manager for Sick’s Rainier Brewing Co. of Spokane from 1947 to 1962, and was a loaned executive of the 1959-60 United Crusade campaign.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Friends, the Moose Lodge and Thomas Becket Catholic Church.

He also was active in the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, Cub Scouts and the Parent Teacher Association at his sons’ schools.

After living in Spokane for 49 years, he and his wife moved to Eugene in 1992.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Neil and Gary Pettigrew, both of Spokane, Richard Pettigrew of Eugene, Ore., James Pettigrew of Kenmore, Wash., and Thomas Pettigrew of Shoreline, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Marie Shaver

Spokane

Graveside service for J. Marie Shaver, 100, will be today at 1 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shaver, who was born in Lancaster, Ohio, died Wednesday. She was a resident of Spokane for 50 years.

She attended Michigan State Normal College, later working for Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. She retired in 1964.

She returned to work as a secretary and assisted a local attorney, retiring again in 1983.

Mrs. Shaver was a member of the National League of American Pen Women Inc., Zonta Club of Spokane, Lilac City Business and Professional Women’s Club, Spokane Chapter-The Composers, Authors and Artists of America, Poetry Scribes of Spokane and Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, T. Ray Shaver, died in 1992.

There are no immediate surviving family members.

Lewis Button

Kooskia, Idaho

A celebration of the life of Lewis H. Button, 67, will be today at 11 a.m. at Valley Bible Church in Kooskia. Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Button, who was born in Troy, Idaho, died Thursday.

He received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of Idaho, and taught for three years at the junior high school in Clarkston, Wash.

Mr. Button later continued his studies at Michigan State University and earned a certificate of science from three schools that include Vanderbilt University, Wisconsin State University in Superior and the University of Colorado.

Mr. Button taught for 19 years at John Muir Middle School and Horace Mann Junior High School in Wausau, Wis., before moving to Spokane.

He taught science for three years at Northwest Christian School and was then named headmaster at Northwest Christian School, K-12, retiring in 1998.

He later moved to Kooskia.

Mr. Button was a community volunteer and was a member of the Kooskia City Council.

He was involved with Valley Bible Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Julia Bradley of Auburn, Wash.; three brothers, Sherman of Donnelly, Idaho, and Gene and Roger, both of Boise; two sisters, Kitty Jenson of Boise and Joann Lycan of Lewiston.

Memorials may be made to the Kooskia Emergency Medical Technicians or the Lewis H. Button Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Northwest Christian Schools in Spokane.
