Idaho poet receives governor’s award

The Spokesman-Review

Robert Wrigley, University of Idaho creative writing director, received the 2004 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts presented Oct. 2 at the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa. Of the 16 Idahoans honored, he is the only one to be given an award in the literary arts.

The Idaho Commission on the Arts established the biennial awards in 1970 to recognize extraordinary achievement and increase awareness of Idaho arts and artists.

Wrigley’s work has appeared in national journals and magazines, including Poetry, The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly, and has received recognition from Poetry Magazine and the Poetry Society of America.

His published books of poetry include “The Sinking Of Clay City,” Copper Canyon Press, 1979; “Moon in a Mason Jar,” University of Illinois, 1986; “What My Father Believed,” Illinois, 1991; “In the Bank of Beautiful Sins,” Penguin, 1995; “Reign of Snakes,” Penguin Putnam, 1999; and “Lives of the Animals,” Penguin, 2003.

Wrigley, who has lived in Idaho since 1977, taught at Lewis-Clark State College until joining UI in 1999 and now directs the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing. He also has taught at the University of Oregon, the University of Montana and Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. His past honors include two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and two fellowships from the Idaho Commission on the Arts. He also served as the state of Idaho’s Writer-in-Residence from 1987 to 1988.

• Area University of Idaho students were recently inducted to be among the 1,700 members who live in the nine sororities and 18 fraternities on the Moscow campus.

The number of sorority recruitment participants was higher than it has been since 2001, and 96 percent of those who participated in recruitment ended up joining a chapter.
