Councils sponsoring food drive

Spokane’s 26 neighborhood councils and the city of Spokane’s Office of Neighborhood Services are sponsoring a citywide food drive Saturday.

Drop off your nonperishable food items from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at one of the following locations: East Central Community Center, 500 S. Stone St.; West Central Community Council, 1603 N. Belt St.; Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.; Peaceful Valley Community Center, 214 N. Cedar St.; the Southside Senior Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave.; and Peters & Sons Flowers, 170 S. Lincoln St.

Barrels for food donations also will be available in City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., today and Friday.

All food will go to the Second Harvest Inland Northwest.

Comstock Neighborhood cleanup

The Comstock Neighborhood Council is continuing its efforts to assist residents in cleaning up their neighborhood. Comstock residents may bring their “clean and green” yard waste to the Sacajawea Middle School parking lot from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Enter the parking lot on 33rd and be prepared to help unload.

“Clean and green” waste includes leaves, grass clippings, sod less than two inches thick, pine needles, pine cones, brush, limbs less than three-feet in diameter and less than four-feet long. Materials must be disposed of without bags. Bags are fine for transport, but be prepared to empty bags for disposal.

Previously composted material, sod, dirt, stumps, animal feces, flocked Christmas trees, lumber are not acceptable items.

Proof of residency will be required before dumping. You can show a recent copy of a utility bill and/or printed check plus picture ID.

Rockwood council to hold special meeting

A special meeting of the Rockwood Neighborhood Council will be at 7 tonight at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral to review the Manito/Grand Center planning work that is under way.

The voting membership of the neighborhood will be given the opportunity to review and comment on the Manito/Grand Center plan before it is submitted to the city of Spokane and City Council for approval.

By vote of the neighborhood council members, the neighborhood council will meet monthly at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month (except December and August) at St. John’s Cathedral, Jewett House, Guild Room.

The annual meeting will be Jan. 6 and will elect several new officers and directors, including a new chairman and vice chairman.

The neighborhood will hold its fall clean-green yard waste and household pickup from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 30 at Hutton Elementary School, 908 E. 24th Ave.

Neighborhood Council meetings

• The Manito/Cannon Hill Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Wilson Elementary School, 911 W. 25th Ave.

• The Latah/Hangman Valley Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Tidyman’s on the Cheney-Spokane Road on Highway 195.
