Latin Grammy Awards promising

Joel Brown New York Times Syndicate

Carlos Santana is going to play with Los Lonely Boys, which is all you need to say to get me to watch the fifth annual Latin Grammy Awards tonight at 8 on CBS.

The original Latin rocker and the hot young trio from Texas should be an awesomely combustible mix.

Helloooo! Producers! Give them a nice long spot so the guitarists can light it up, OK?

George Lopez hosts the festivities from Los Angeles, and the performers and presenters will be a diverse bunch, ranging from hot bands like Cafe Tacuba to pump-up-the-ratings celebs like Jessica Simpson.

At 7, the Big Three networks join the Republican National Convention, already in progress at Madison Square Garden.

Tonight’s highlight should be the speech by Vice President Dick Cheney, who will be renominated.

Coverage plans may change if the demonstrations outside the convention become newsworthy.

C-SPAN, of course, will be gavel to gavel, KSPS will offer three hours of coverage beginning at 5, and the whole galaxy of cable news channels will offer extensive coverage, much of it within the context of their regular lineup of shows.

Highlights

Sitcom hell, ABC at 8: Two repeats of “My Wife and Kids” followed by two new episodes of the walking-dead “Drew Carey Show.”

“Hawaii,” NBC at 9: Premiere. Michael Biehn of “The Terminator” (1984), Sharif Atkins of “ER” and Eric Balfour, who will be forever known as the guy who sucked Claire’s toes on “Six Feet Under,” carry badges in the cast of this island cop show, which appears likely to make you pine for the stern countenance of Steve McGarrett.

They’re hip young cops who drive hot cars confiscated from crooks and tackle cases like the one tonight, involving some severed heads.

“Renovate My Family,” Fox at 8: Two-hour premiere — excuse me, “preview special” — finds the Biggins family from “Trading Spouses” submitting to further indignities, um, improvements, from their house to their personal lives.

“Amish in the City,” UPN at 8: Jonas takes his GED.

“Smallville,” WB at 8: Back-to-back repeats, including one with a guest appearance by Christopher Reeve.

“Dateline,” NBC at 10: Former “Dateline” host Jane Pauley talks to former sidekick Stone Phillips about her bipolar illness, her new book and her new talk show.

Family Fare

“Casper” (1995), Fam at 8: Friendly-ghost flick starring Christina Ricci, still in her spooky kid mode, before she became an indie film fave.

Cable Cast

Baseball, ESPN at 4.

“Designer Finals Summer Block Party,” HGTV at 8: A week of student designers facing big tests with $2,000 budgets. Tonight, a dull living room gets a new look.

Sunday night on Wednesday, HBO at 9: Repeats of the weekend’s installments of “Six Feet Under,” “Entourage” and “Da Ali G Show.”

“Rescue Me,” FX at 10: Tommy (Denis Leary) takes some time off and plans a bold move to get back together with Janet.

Late Night Talk

“Late Show with David Letterman,” CBS at 11:35: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who’s certainly playing an interesting role in this election year, and musical guest Tom Russell.

It wouldn’t be exactly a huge surprise if Dave had some other Republican walk-ons this week, with the convention in town.

“Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” NBC at 11:35: Lance Armstrong, Paul Teutel Sr. and Jr., and music from Usher.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC at 12:05 a.m.

“Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” NBC at 12:35: John C. Reilly, Ja Rule and David Feherty.
