Baltimore’s Bedard shut down for rest of season
Orioles rookie left-hander Erik Bedard has been shut down for the remainder of the year after pitching more than 133 innings in his first full season following elbow ligament replacement surgery.
A surprise addition to Baltimore’s starting rotation out of spring training, Bedard started 26 games this year. He’s 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA, but 1-4 since Aug. 6.
Bedard had surgery on his left elbow in September 2002 and pitched in only six minor league games in 2003.
Millwood back from DL
The Phillies activated right-hander Kevin Millwood from the disabled list.
Millwood had been on the DL with tendinitis in his right elbow since Aug. 5, missing 34 games. He threw about 35 pain-free pitches in a simulated game Friday, but manager Larry Bowa was unsure when he might return to action.
Clearing the bases
Toronto ace Roy Halladay threw 25 pitches during his second simulated game in four days and if all goes well will start Sept. 21 against the Yankees. … The Tigers called up reliever Roberto Novoa, outfielder Curtis Granderson and infielder Ryan Raburn from Double-A Erie.
