WHL fines Chiefs, T-Birds for fighting; suspends Couture, rival

The Spokane Chiefs and the Seattle Thunderbirds franchises have each been fined $250 by the Western Hockey League as a result of a multiple-fight situation in their exhibition game on Saturday night in Kent, Wash.

Liam Couture of the Spokane Chiefs and Scott Jackson of the Seattle Thunderbirds have each been suspended for one game, presumably Saturday night’s exhibition rematch between the teams set for 7 p.m. at Spokane’s Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

The action was announced by the WHL on its Web site Tuesday. Further information about the fights had not been provided by either team or the league as of Tuesday.

Chiefs officials could not be reached for comment at presstime. Couture practiced with the team on Tuesday.

Heiber leads City Championship

Dru Heiber of Spokane Country Club leads the field of golfers after the first day of the women’s City Championship at Esmeralda Golf Course.

Heiber shot an 80, followed by Beth Wrigley at 81. Last years’ City Champion, Sheryl McCormack, is three shots back at 83.

Competition continues at Sun Dance Golf Course today with the final round on Thursday at Wandermere Golf Course.

‘s women’s golf team shot a final-round 321 to slip into last place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic at Fort Collins, Colo.

The Bulldogs had two golfers shoot sub-80 rounds as the Bulldogs finished with a 54-hole total of 964.

Host Colorado State won the tournament, shooting a team total of 295.

•The University of Idaho men’s golf team faltered in the third round of the Northwest Collegiate Classic and fell from a tie for fourth into ninth place. Meanwhile, Washington State University’s Ben Bryson tied for 21st place and WSU finished eighth in the team race.

Whits earn honors

Three Whitworth athletes have earned weekly honors based on their performances over the past week.

Men’s soccer player Todd Sabrowski (Jr., D, Oregon City, Ore.) has been named the Northwest Conference offensive player of the week.

Meanwhile, football place-kicker Cam Collings (Jr., Mead) is this week’s NWC special teams player of the week. Quarterback Joel Clark (So., Mt. Spokane) has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
