Four Lakeland School District students were selected by Athol Post 149 to attend the American Legion Idaho Gem Boys State program held in Caldwell, Idaho, in June. Attendees and their schools are listed.
Jason McMillen, Lance Carr and Mathew Bethke, all from Lakeland High School, and Nathan Lewis of Timberlake High School.
The program provides high school juniors with a hands-on experience in the operation and fundamentals of a democratic government.
• Local high school students, Noonie Sawir, Moscow, and Alyssa Delbridge-Ramos, of Sandpoint, recently took part in the U-DOC enrichment program held at both the University of Idaho and Washington State University this summer. The program allows students interested in a medical profession to explore medical and health careers while preparing for their college experience.
U-DOC participants gained an introduction to various health professions while observing the curriculum requirements for each. They learned basic medical procedures from health care professionals at hospitals and clinics in Moscow, Plummer, Pullman and Spokane and a small group of students also were involved in service projects with the elderly at Moscow senior citizen locations. Students took part in exercises that were designed to improve test-taking, studying, writing and computer and presentation skills. They also visited Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake and a pathology lab in Spokane.
