Mead, U-Hi take care of business, set up showdown

Mead and University made certain on Thursday night that their upcoming Greater Spokane League volleyball showdown will be a matchup of unbeaten teams.

Mead (7-0) swept aside visiting Ferris 25-20, 25-9, 25-15 as Debra DeFelice had four aces. DeFelice and Mara Ryan each served up three aces in the second game.

U-Hi (7-0) turned away Gonzaga Prep 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18 at G-Prep. Mandy Daniels had a match-high 19 kills and 26 digs to lead the Titans, and Kara Crisp collected 39 assists. Kelly Mastor had 16 kills and Liz Hardan amassed 38 assists for G-Prep.

U-Hi will play at Mead at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In other GSL matches, Central Valley won its second consecutive contest, stopping Cheney 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 at CV. Senior hitter Rachel Adams served up five aces for the victorious Bears, with junior Samantha Kerns piling up 22 assists and 15 digs. … Ivy Bush had 11 kills, nine digs and an ace to lead Lewis and Clark past visiting East Valley, 25-15, 25-15, 25-13. Angie Smith led EV with 10 kills. … Shadle Park received 13 kills from Catie Schuetzle en route to a 25-14, 25-17, 25-10 sweep at Rogers. Carly White added 13 digs for the Highlanders. … Mt. Spokane made swift work of host Clarkston, 25-11, 25-14, 25-12, behind the five aces of Annie Kitchens. … North Central toppled visiting West Valley 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15. Shantel Haugen had 34 assists and Anna Walters came up with 15 digs for NC. Jessica Gudgel had 10 digs to lead WV.

Girls soccer

Ashley Attridge scored a pair of second-half goals to lift Deer Park past host Chewelah 4-1 in a Great Northern League match. Goalkeeper Shauneen Palmer made 13 saves to earn the win for the Stags. … Kim Fischer had a goal and an assist to lead Riverside to a 2-0 win over visiting Medical Lake.

Idaho preps

Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint played to a 2-all tie in an Inland Empire League girls soccer showdown at Sandpoint. CdA’s Chelsea Brown scored at the 31-minute mark to even the score, and the two teams played a scoreless second half. … In another IEL match, freshman forward Ciara Kremer scored twice to carry Lake City to a 4-2 win over visiting Moscow.
