Original ‘Star Wars’ series takes flight on DVD

Few film series have had more of an effect on Hollywood than this original trio of George Lucas- created sci-fi/adventure flicks. By combining the feel-good emotions of 1940s war films with what at the time was state-of-the-art special effects, Lucas turned moviegoers into sensation junkies – and we’ve never stopped seeking that big-screen buzz. This boxed DVD edition of four discs comes in full-screen and wide-screen versions, and the fourth disc is a two-and-a-half-hour “making-of” feature. With Lucas’ much- commented-upon upgrades to the original films, the changes in content (Han Solo doesn’t fire until an alien shoots at him first!) aren’t likely to put off “Stars Wars” fans all that much. “Mean Girls”

Lindsay Lohan stars as the new girl in school who, when adopted by the outsiders, attracts the attention of the Plastics, a trio of “popular” girls led by the evil Regina (Rachel McAdams). When she agrees to spy on them, however, the lines between pretense and reality get blurred and she ends up learning a harsh lesson. It’s all pretty standard, but writer Tina Fey (who plays a math teacher) adds in enough “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” moments to make it all entertaining. (DVD, VHS; 1:30; rated PG-13 for sexual content, language, teen partying)

“Ichi the Killer: Episode Zero”

This bit of ultraviolent anime is the “prequel” to Japanese director Miike Takashi’s 2001 feature “Ichi the Killer,” a film that one reviewer called a “strong contender for the sickest movie of all time” and another described as a “nihilistic ride into the deepest trenches of the human psyche.” To see how our, uh, antihero got that way, check out this creation of a psychopath. “Mad TV: The Complete First Season”

The sketch-comedy show, now in its 10th season (on FOX, with reruns on Comedy Central), offers all 22 episodes of its first season plus the series pilot, bloopers, never-seen-before sketches and other bonus material. (DVD only; 13:26; not rated)
