Tikker, Meek help Idaho rally past Aggies in four games

Kati Tikker totaled 19 kills and Sarah Meek added 15 kills and eight block assists Thursday night to guide the University of Idaho to a 3-1 win over visiting Utah State in Big West Conference volleyball play at Memorial Gym.

Utah State (1-7, 0-3) won the opening game 30-24, but the Vandals (7-3, 2-1) rallied during the 30-25 second game by hitting .415. Idaho closed out the match with 30-25, 30-23 wins.

Mandy Becker added 43 assists and Meghan Brown 24 digs for the Vandals

Zuzana Cernianska, a junior from the Czech Republic, led the Aggies with 20 kills and 17 digs.

Women’s soccer

Reserve Chelsea Card scored off both of her shots on goal to lead Utah (5-2-1) to a 4-1 non-conference win over visiting Washington State (4-2-1) at Salt Lake City.

Card’s first goal, on a one-on-one play during the final minute of the first half, gave the Utes a 2-0 lead. Brooke Bemis fed Haley Miller in the 54th minute for the Cougars’ score.

Men’s basketball

Gonzaga’s Blake Stepp and Cory Violette, and Alvin Snow of Eastern Washington were all selected by the Idaho Stampede during Tuesday’s Continental Basketball Association draft.

Stepp, a second-round selection in the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, was tabbed in the CBA’s first round by the Stampede, a team based in Boise. After selecting Stepp, the Stampede took another guard, EWU’s Snow, in the second round, and GU forward Violette in the fourth.

Former GU forward Casey Calvary played with the Stampede last season.

Forty-eight players were selected over six rounds.

Women’s basketball

Sydney Benson, a 6-foot-1 post from Snohomish (Wash.) High, has committed to play at Eastern Washington.

Benson averaged 6.5 points, six rebounds and more than three blocked shots per game last season for the Panthers, a State 4A semifinalist. She took a big step by averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds at the district tournament.
