Chewelah notches win in volleyball over Pullman

Jordan Monsamith’s 13th kill was the biggest, finishing off Pullman as Chewelah knocked off the visiting Greyhounds 26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 15-13 in Saturday volleyball action.

In the fifth game the Cougars (3-1 Great Northern League) battled back from four down, and in the third game Chewelah was down six before rallying to beat Pullman (2-1). Miranda Weitz led Pullman with 15 kills and five blocks and Amy Small dished out 40 assists and six aces.

• Visiting Lakeside (4-1) swept Deer Park (0-4) 3-0 behind 11 kills and three aces by Kati Tikker. Lindsay Jelke had 25 assists for the Eagles, and Belinda Buchholz chipped in nine digs.

Girls soccer

Nicole Cantu, Jacy Fitzpatrick and Emily Carpenter nailed penalty kicks to lead Lakeside (1-1 GNL) to a 2-1 shootout victory over visiting Deer Park (1-1) at Nine Mile Falls. Makenzie Lowther scored 15 seconds in to give the Stags an early lead, but Katrina Berger scored the equalizer with 5 minutes left in regular time to send the game into overtime. In the shootout, Lakeside outscored DP 3-1. … Cory Druffel scored a goal and assisted on a Britney Winterbottom goal to help Pullman (2-0) to a 3-0 home win over Colville (0-2). The Greyhounds outshot Colville 14-1.

Cross country

North Central’s boys took top honors at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula, outscoring Lewis and Clark 128-146. Luke Graesser led the Indians’ charge to the title, finishing the 3-mile course sixth at 15 minutes, 32 seconds. Michael Skansgaard of Gonzaga Prep was the top local placer, coming in third at 15:17, 8 seconds off the pace. Flathead (Mont.) girls finished first, two spots ahead of top local squad Mt. Spokane. Megan O’Reilly paced the Wildcats, finishing second at 18:15, but still crossed the finish line 75 seconds behind winner Zoe Nelson of Flathead , who set a course record. … Central Valley’s boys won the team title at the Wenatchee Invite, beating second place Oak Harbor 49-98. Sean Coyle and Alex Blackburn led the Bears, as Coyle finished the 3-mile course in 16:42, with Blackburn 1 second behind. East Valley’s girls squeaked by host Wenatchee 41-52, and the Knights were paced by Allison Gibson, who finished fourth at 19:39, 23 seconds behind the leader. Mallory Udelhofen of EV finished sixth at 20:05. … University’s boys finished third out of 28 teams at the Bellevue Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park, and its girls finished fourth out of 40 teams. Matt Winkler was the leading Titans runner, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 20th place at 16:26.

Football

Jonathan Stewart, a senior at Timberline High in Lacey, Wash., set the state record for rushing Friday night in a 54-0 win at Yelm. Stewart broke the mark of 6,128 yards on a 51-yard run with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Stewart finished the night with 242 yards on 12 carries and 6,275 career yards. With at least six games remaining in his season, Stewart will likely greatly improve upon the record. Jerod Moore of Wahkiakum held the previous state record.
