Hanich, Kirk score to lift Vikings into first place

Joe Hanich and K.C. Kirk each scored Saturday to lead Coeur d’Alene to a 2-0 boys soccer win at Moscow that helped the Vikings take control of the Inland Empire League.

The Vikings (7-2-1, 4-0-1) scored in the 22nd minute, when Hanich scored off an assist by Trey Leonard, and built a two-goal lead over the Bears (5-2, 5-1) in the 67th minute as Mike Vredenburg set up Kirk’s goal. The two teams don’t play again until their last match of the year, on Oct. 16.

Also in the IEL, Lewiston played visiting Sandpoint to a scoreless tie despite being outshot by the Bulldogs 13-4. Jeremiah Robinson made 12 saves for the Bengals (1-5-2, 1-4-1) and Seth Baker only had to make two saves to get the shutout for Sandpoint (4-2-1, 3-1-1).

•In a non-leaguer, Derek Oxford scored two first-half goals and Cody Foster-Witko assisted on two first-half scores to push Bonners Ferry (4-3-2) to a 5-3 win at Valley Christian (0-4).

Girls soccer

Kylie France, Elle Carne and Abby Jensen scored goals in the first 20 minutes to lead Sandpoint to an 8-0 home win over visiting Lewiston (2-6-1, 0-6 IEL). France and Katie Adams both had two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs (7-2-2, 5-0-1). … Mia Tibbals scored twice, including a goal in the 64th minute, to give Moscow a 3-2 road win over Coeur d’Alene (5-3-2, 3-1-2). The Bears (6-3, 3-3) had three goals in a 15-minute span in the second half to turn a 1-0 deficit into a win. The Vikings’ loss leaves Sandpoint the last undefeated team in league play.

Natalie Nichols had a hat trick by the 44th minute as Lakeland (6-2-1) rolled over visiting Riverside (2-3) 5-0 in a non-leaguer. Alisha Puckett scored once with two assists, and Kayla Steigemeier had three assists for the Hawks.

Volleyball

La Jolla (Calif.) slipped by Lakeland 26-24, 25-21 in the championship game at the Lakeland Invitational at Rathdrum. The Hawks beat Bonners Ferry and Coeur d’Alene to reach the title match. In other round-robin games, La Jolla defeated Kellogg; Coeur d’Alene beat Priest River in three games; and Colville knocked off Timberlake. Several Idaho athletes made the all-tournament team, including Jenna Griffitts (Coeur d’Alene), Cassie Duncan (Lakeland) and Ashley Beck (Lakeland).

•Lakeside outlasted visiting Logos 15-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-15 and 15-6 for a non-league win at Plummer. Nona Johnson led the Knights (5-3) with seven kills and 12 aces, and had eight consecutive aces during a 10-point service run in the second game.

Washington volleyball

Jordan Monasmith‘s 13th kill was the biggest, finishing off Pullman as Chewelah knocked off the visiting Greyhounds 26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 15-13. In the fifth game the Cougars (3-1 Great Northern League) battled back from four down, and in the third game Chewelah was down six before rallying to beat Pullman (2-1). Miranda Weitz led Pullman with 15 kills and five blocks. … Visiting Lakeside (4-1) swept Deer Park (0-4) 3-0 behind 11 kills and three aces by Kati Tikker.
