Portland State knocks off No. 12 McNeese State

Allen Kennett and Joe Rubin ran for two touchdowns each as Portland State upset McNeese State 35-14 in a non-conference game on Saturday in Portland.

Kennett and Rubin rarely carry the ball for the Vikings (2-1), but the team’s top rusher – Ryan Fuqua – left the game early in the second half with a bruised hip. Kennett and Rubin picked up the slack.

McNeese State (2-2), ranked No. 12 in Division I-AA coming in, had 320 yards of offense, but the Cowboys were penalized 13 times for 122 yards and had five turnovers.

Trailing 21-7, the Cowboys’ hopes for a comeback ended when PSU’s Ryan Friesen intercepted a pass and returned it to the 1-yard line. Kennett scored two plays later.

N. Arizona 55, Weber State 27

Kevin Gerard returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns as the Lumberjacks (1-2, 1-0) rolled to a victory over the visiting Wildcats (0-4, 0-1).

Gerard scored on returns of 79 and 61 yards.

Roger Robinson rushed for 146 yards and two TDs and Jason Murrietta completed 18 of 26 passes for 217 yards and three scores for NAU.

Nick Chournos ran for 125 yards and a TD for the Wildcats.

Montana 27, N. Colorado 16

Jefferson Heidelberger caught three passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns and the Grizzlies (3-1) held the Bears (1-3) out of the end zone on two key drives late in the fourth quarter to earn a victory in Missoula.

Montana (3-1), ranked seventh in NCAA Division I-AA, forced Northern Colorado (1-3) to turn over the ball on downs on the 1-yard line with 3:52 remaining.

The Bears had a touchdown pass called back on a penalty as the clock ran out.

Northern Colorado outgained Montana 506 yards to 343 in total offense, but the Bears settled for field goals on three drives and had three turnovers.

Colorado St. 39, Montana St. 14

Justin Holland threw two touchdowns passes and Jeff Babcock kicked three field goals to lead the Division I-A Rams (1-3) to a victory over the Bobcats (1-2) in Fort Collins, Colo.

Holland, who had thrown eight interceptions in the first three games, was 21 for 35 for 311 yards and only one pick. Dave Osborn caught five passes for 101 yards.

CSU was off to its worst start since opening the 1987 season 0-6.

UC Davis 58, Sacramento St. 23

O.J. Swanigan rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and the Aggies (3-0) scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Hornets (1-2) in Davis, Calif., in the 51st Causeway Classic.

Ryan Mole rushed for 132 yards and a score for the Hornets.
