Event will honor Cheney volunteer Mary Jane Booth
Mary Jane Booth will be honored at a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Cheney Community Library, 610 First St.
The event is sponsored by Beta Sigma Phi, in recognition of her many years of volunteer service that have benefited the community.
Declared First Lady of the Year by the international social club for women, Booth has worked primarily in two areas: environmental and historical preservation and service to benefit children.
Booth was part of a small group that began and maintained a recycling program from the 1960s until 1994, when the city of Cheney took it over.
She was also instrumental in forming the Friends of Turnbull Refuge, which works to involve the public in the activities of the refuge.
Booth tutored children at Betz Elementary School and was a Camp Fire leader and organizer for 15 years.
Her work for the Cheney Museum included collecting, cleaning, recording and displaying the extensive collection, as well as serving as director for many terms.
