Michael Garciaparra’s 10th-inning single drove in Greg Dobbs with the winning run Friday night as the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 in Las Vegas.

Garciaparra, a minor league infielder brought up for the exhibition by the Mariners, is the younger brother of Cubs’ shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.

The Mariners scored twice in the seventh and tied the game 4-4 when Ichiro Suzuki scored from second base on Jeremy Reed’s infield single.

The Cubs took a 3-0 lead off Mariners’ starter Bobby Madritsch on Corey Patterson’s first-inning home run, an RBI double by Jeromy Burnitz and a run-scoring single by Scott McClain in the second inning. Aramis Ramirez also homered for the Cubs, in the fifth inning.

Madritsch allowed 10 hits and four runs in five innings.

Randy Winn and Raul Ibanez homered for the Mariners off Cubs’ starter Ryan Dempster, who allowed five hits and two runs in four innings. Ibanez leads the American League with 27 RBI.

Suzuki, who had hit safely in all 19 previous spring games, went 0 for 5.

Notes

Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said he expects closer Eddie Guardado, slowed much of spring training because of a hamstring injury, to be available on opening day Monday. Guardado pitched an inning in a minor league game Friday. … Cubs right-hander Mark Prior will pitch in a minor league game today in Mesa, Ariz., as he comes back from elbow inflammation. … Right-hander Kerry Wood, scheduled to start the Cubs’ home opener April 8, will pitch in a minor league game Sunday as he recovers from bursitis in his shoulder.

Mariners claim Valdez from Mets

The Mariners claimed infielder Wilson Valdez off waivers from the New York Mets.

Seattle also put right-hander Rafael Soriano, who is recovering from ligament replacement elbow surgery, on the 60-day disabled list.

Valdez, 26, spent part of last season with the White Sox, playing in 19 games, hitting .233 (10 for 43) with a home run and four RBIs.
