Idaho gets new assistant

Long-time Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball coach George Pfeifer is leaving LCSC to take an assistant coaching position at the University of Idaho, The Spokesman-Review has learned.

Pfeifer will fill one of two vacancies on Idaho head coach Leonard Perry’s staff. According to a UI press release earlier this week, four-year assistant Mark Leslie left to pursue other opportunities and three-year assistant Brynjar Brynjarsson departed to be with his wife and son in Minnesota.

Pfeifer is a well-known figure throughout North Idaho. The St. Maries native has coached at Hardin (Mont.) High, St. Maries High and Rocky Mountain College. Pfeifer has a son and a daughter attending Idaho.

Pfeifer has compiled a 296-206 record in 16 seasons at the Lewiston school, including six trips to the NAIA Tournament. Four of his last six teams at LCSC qualified for nationals. He produced six 20-win seasons and the 2003-04 Warriors finished 31-6, setting a school record for wins.

LCSC recently completed a 25-9 season that ended with a first-round loss in the NAIA Tournament. The Warriors were ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA poll.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that Wyoming assistant Leroy Washington resigned to take the same position at Idaho.
