Sande wins girls 800, 1,600 to lead Lake City’s victory

For a second straight year, Lake City’s girls and boys track teams were too much for the field in the 13th annual Christina Finney Relays at Post Falls.

On a Tuesday afternoon more fitting for an indoor meet, the Timberwolves combined for 271 points to easily outdistance runner-up Moscow (212) and Post Falls (177).

The eight-team meet featured all seven Inland Empire League teams and Kootenai. It’s the second year that they took the “coed” out of the Finney Relays.

In the 11 previous meets, the invite combined the times and marks of two boys and two girls to determine winners of eight relays, six field events, two hurdle races and the long-distance races. Last year, Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell changed the format, staging a traditional meet and combining the team scores of the girls and boys for a final coed result.

Breanna Sande led LC with victories in the 800- (2 minutes, 23.6 seconds) and 1,600-meter runs (5:30.0). Teammate Holly Meyer won the 300 hurdles (46.1).

Kootenai junior Darcy Collins won the 100 hurdles (15.5), 200 (26.7) and high jump (5 feet). Kelsey Taylor of Moscow was a winner in the shot put (37-3) and discus (121-1).

Among boys, Matt Grogan of Lewiston was a triple winner in the 100 (10.9), 110 hurdles (15.4) and 300 hurdles (41.5). Steven Potratz of Moscow won the 1,600 (4:44.2) and 3,200 (10:31).
