Moldenhauer Lecture at Whitworth

Composer and music instructor Donivan Johnson will explore the music and mind of pioneering American composer Charles Ives in the annual Hans Moldenhauer Memorial Lecture on Monday at Whitworth College.

Johnson says Ives’ work “ranges from sublimely simple to some of the most complex music ever composed.”

In addition to his talk, Johnson will direct a 10-piece chamber orchestra of Whitworth music students in a performance of Ives’ best-known composition, “The Unanswered Question,” written in 1906.

Johnson, music instructor for the Selkirk School District in northeastern Washington, inaugurated the Hans Moldenhauer Lecture in 1994 to honor the memory of the German-born, world-renowned musicologist/archivist who lived in Spokane and graduated from Whitworth.

Monday’s program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Whitworth’s Music Building Recital Hall. Admission is free; a reception will follow. For more information call (509) 777-3280.
