Welch grabs lead in Pac-10 Women’s Golf Championship

Washington State University’s Kim Welch collected seven birdies en route to a 6-under-par 66 to grab the lead after Tuesday’s second round of the Pacific-10 Conference Women’s Golf Championships in Pleasanton, Calif.

Welch sits at 8-under-par 136 heading into today’s final round. She’s three strokes ahead of Arizona’s Cassandra Kirkland and UCLA’s Susie Mathews.

Welch broke her school record for low round by four strokes.

WSU sisters Anastasia and Maria Kostina are tied for 19th place at 152, helping the Cougars (592) to a fifth-place standing, 13 shots behind front-running UCLA.

“Eastern Washington University’s Sheena Prante and Carlie Allen are in the top 10 and the Eagles sit in fourth place after the first two rounds of the Big Sky Conference women’s golf tournament at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz.

Prante carded a 75 in the second round, giving her an 8-over-par 152, while Allen enters the final day at 153 after a second-round 80.

Portland State (600) has a 10-stroke lead over Montana State in the race for the team title. EWU (618) trails third-place Northern Arizona by seven shots and leads fifth-place Montana by a stroke.

Baseball

Washington State freshman Garrett Kimbrel hit a bases loaded triple during a six-run fifth inning and the Cougars doubled up the Gonzaga Bulldogs 8-4 at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The victory gave the Cougars (18-20) a 4-1 edge as the season series against the Bulldogs (23-14) concluded.

Jay Miller went 3 for 4 for WSU, his 15th multi-hit game this season. Brady Everett also had three hits for the Cougars.

Chris Albrecht (0-1) took the loss for Gonzaga. He allowed nine hits and six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Bulldogs scored all four of their runs in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Jeff Culpepper, a bases loaded walk to Mike Terry, a sac fly by Aaron McGuinnes and an error.

“Washington Huskies sophomore starting pitcher Tim Lincecum was named the Pac-10 pitcher of the week.

Lincecum fired a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Huskies to a 5-1 victory over California. Lincecum took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a one-out double. He struck out 11.
