NIC employee wins medal at regional culinary contest

Steve Taylor, food services supervisor at North Idaho College, recently placed in a food preparation and presentation competition at the regional National Association of College and University Food Services conference.

Taylor earned a fourth-place bronze medal in the competition in which NIC was the only two-year college participating. There was no gold medal awarded and only four points separated first from fourth place.

Nine chefs participated in the Culinary Challenge, during which they had 75 minutes to prepare a saddle of lamb from a raw state. Participants were judged on the strict guidelines and food safety rules of the American Culinary Federation, starting with a specific point value and having points taken away for each violation. Each competitor prepared four plates that presented the meat with a starch and vegetable.

•Area University of Idaho students were recently recognized for outstanding academic achievements at the university’s honors convocation on the Moscow campus.

Honorees were inducted into a scholastic honor society this academic year, or named to the dean’s list, or received an Alumni Award for Excellence last December. The ceremony included all freshman and transfer students who became members of the University Honors Program. Students from North Idaho are listed by hometown.
