A scouth of Scottish fiddles will fill The Met on Sunday.

A “scouth” means an abundance. Alasdair Fraser and the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers, 50 strong, will crowd The Met stage in this lilting celebration of jigs, reels and airs.

Fraser is the musical director of the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers, a troupe which also features accompaniment by piano, drums, cello, guitars and harp.

He’s a world-renowned fiddler himself. You may have heard his haunting airs on the soundtracks to “Titanic” and “The Last of the Mohicans.”

In 1999, he played a solo tribute to Sean Connery during the “Kennedy Center Honors” broadcast on CBS. Fraser has also been featured on “A Prairie Home Companion” and “CBS Sunday Morning.”

When it comes to Scottish fiddling Fraser is America’s go-to guy, and often the world’s go-to guy, as well.

This native of Scotland is in constant demand at recording sessions and events around the world. He has been the artist-in-residence at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow and is the director of his own fiddling school in California.

The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers play a variety of music within the Scottish tradition, including ancient tunes from the Highlands, the Western Isles, the northeast of Scotland and Shetland. They also play music that originated in Cape Breton Island off the northeast coast of Canada. They even tackle some contemporary Scottish tunes.

Spokane’s Celtic Nots open the show, which is sponsored by the St. Andrew’s Society of Spokane.

Fraser also will conduct a Scottish fiddle workshop on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Holy Names Music Center, 3910 W. Custer Drive.

The cost of the workshop is $25 for adults, $15 for children and $10 to observe. Call Holy Names at 326-9516 to register.
