Associated Press

American League

White Sox 4, Tigers 3: At Detroit, Scott Podsednik hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning, and Chicago beat Detroit for its fourth straight win.

Twins 10, Royals 9 (10): Lew Ford hit a one-out single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning that lifted Minnesota past visiting Kansas City at Minneapolis.

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0: At Baltimore, Matt Clement scattered eight hits over eight innings, and Boston beat Rodrigo Lopez and Baltimore to complete a two-game sweep. Kevin Millar scored the game’s only run in the second inning after a throwing error by shortstop Miguel Tejada.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3: Mike Mussina won for the first time this season as New York beat Toronto. Mussina (1-1) allowed three runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking one. The 36-year-old right-hander escaped jams in the third and fourth by inducing double-play grounders.

Devil Rays 3, Rangers 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Dewon Brazelton snapped his seven-game losing skid and Carl Crawford had a tiebreaking groundout in Tampa Bay’s victory over Texas. Brazelton (1-3) allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Indians at Los Angeles Angels: Orlando Cabrera homered leading off the bottom of the 10th inning to cap Los Angeles’ rally from a 5-0 deficit in a win over Cleveland. Francisco Rodriguez (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th inning for the victory.

National League

Pirates 4, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Jason Bay hit his first home run of the season and scored two runs as Pittsburgh snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over Cincinnati. Bay had three hits, finishing a triple short of the cycle, and his solo homer in the fifth off Eric Milton (2-2) was his first since Sept. 29.

Braves 2, Nationals 1: Shortstop Cristian Guzman’s two-run throwing error on Raul Mondesi’s bases-loaded grounder with two outs in the ninth allowed visiting Atlanta to rally for a victory over Washington. It was the first loss of the season for Washington’s bullpen, which entered leading the major leagues with a 5-0 record.

Phillies 6, Rockies 3: At Philadelphia, Jim Thome ended his season-long homer drought to back another solid outing from Jon Lieber in Philadelphia’s win over Colorado. Lieber, who signed a $21 million, three-year contract in December, gave up nine hits and struck out only one in eight innings.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 0: Chris Carpenter pitched a seven-hitter and Scott Rolen homered, doubled and had three RBIs, helping St. Louis beat visiting Chicago.

Mets 10, Marlins 1: At Miami, Pedro Martinez pitched seven innings, Doug Mientkiewicz hit his first career grand slam and New York routed baseball’s stingiest pitching staff, beating Florida. Carlos Beltran homered and drove in three runs for the Mets.

Astros 8, Brewers 7: At Houston, Andy Pettitte pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time since last July, Willy Taveras had an RBI triple and Houston held on for a victory over Milwaukee.

Padres 6, Dodgers 1: At San Diego, Ryan Klesko broke out of a slump with three hits and two RBIs, and San Diego snapped Los Angeles’ eight-game winning streak with a victory.

Diamondbacks vs. Giants: Late.
