Earth Day inspires several events

Several activities are scheduled for national Earth Day today. Area activities include:

•Sandpoint Earth Day Celebration and FunRaiser – 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Ponderay Wal-Mart on U.S. Highway 95; events include chalk art, Eco-Fair and storytelling; 255-4236.

•15th annual Paradise Creek Cleanup – 10 a.m., Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute office, 1040 Rodeo Drive, Moscow; contact Aly, 882-1444.

•Coeur d’Alene Earth Day Celebration – Earth Day Fair with face-painting, games, juggling, an Earth Day Cafe and informational exhibits and demonstrations on alternative energy, noxious weeds and more; 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Harding Family Center, 411 N. 15th St.; 661-2031.

•Plant a Tree Post Falls – The city has 2,400 landscape-size trees to give away to residents, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Q’emiln Park, off Spokane Street.

The following are among activities scheduled in downtown Spokane:

•An Enviro-Film festival will take place in the Spokane City Council chambers, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The following films will be screened:

11 a.m. – “Broken Limbs” examines the plight of Wenatchee apple growers in the age of globalization.

12:10 p.m. – “My First Green Video” is an interactive children’s video about conservation, pollution and ecology.

1 p.m. – “The Green Zone” looks at ways to protect, repair and enjoy riparian zones.

2 p.m. – “Diet for a Small Planet,” shows how to practice vegetarianism and address world hunger.

2:30 p.m. – “Not For Sale” examines the issue of patenting life forms.

•Live musical performances will take place at the Earth Day stage at Riverfront Park’s Gondola Meadows:

11 a.m. – KUumba Drummers, West African drumming.

11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. – Jani Gilbert, folk music.

1 p.m. – Working Spliffs, reggae.

1:45 p.m. – Sidetrack, bluegrass.

2:30 p.m. – Locke & the Chris Wilson 5, hip-hop, rap and indie rock.

• A Procession of the Species will begin at noon, with a parade through the park. Participants should meet at the Earth Day stage in the Gondola Meadows. Bring an animal costume or make an animal mask at the Art School booth in the park.
