Bonds has knee drained of fluids

Around the horn

Barry Bonds had fluid drained from his injured right knee early last week and expects to resume his rehabilitation this week.

The San Francisco Giants slugger, who has not been speaking to the media, announced the development on Saturday on his Web site, www.barrybonds.com.

“I had some fluid drained out of my right knee because there was a little bit of swelling,” he wrote. “By draining the fluid, it alleviates the discomfort. My doctor wants me to use crutches for the next couple of days to make sure the fluid doesn’t come right back. This was merely a precautionary measure. My spirits are still high about my recovery as a whole, and I can’t wait to get back to rehabbing next week.”

Bonds said he would continue giving updates on his injury at his Web site.

Toronto manager ejected

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected by plate umpire Larry Vanover during Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Gibbons was tossed after Alex Rios was thrown out at home plate to end the seventh inning. Rios tried to score on Gregg Zaun’s single to left.

Vanover called Rios out, and Gibbons charged out of the dugout and threw his cap to the turf and argued vehemently. He also appeared to bump Vanover. It was Gibbons’ second ejection of the season.
