Gebbers, Pecka homer during Whitworth sweep

Dan Gebbers homered and drove in three runs to lead the Whitworth Pirates to a 6-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Puget Sound Loggers in Northwest Conference baseball action on Saturday.

The Pirates (17-11, 12-8) got off to a quick start, using Danny Pecka’s three-run homer in the first inning, to post a 6-4 win in the opener.

In the nightcap, Whitworth used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Cody Person (4-1) allowed just five hits in a compete-game effort to earn the victory. He struck out eight and walked just one.

In the first game, Dan Lundeberg allowed three runs – one earned – in eight innings to pick up his fifth win of the season against three losses. He struck out three and walked one.

•The Washington State Cougars’ game against the ninth-ranked Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Ore., was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon today.

•Wenatchee Valley (9-19, 7-9) swept a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader against visiting Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (19-8, 10-6), 3-0 and 6-2.

Bryan Winston went 3 for 5 and Brent Mertens had two hits and an RBI in the second game for CC Spokane.

•The 24th-ranked Stanford Cardinal (23-14, 6-5) scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth to rally for a 10-6 victory over the Washington Huskies (24-16, 4-7) at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Washington committed a season-high five errors in the game.

Softball

Jo Sonnett fired a two-hitter in the opener and Laura Romag drove in six runs in the nightcap to lead the Whitworth Pirates (21-14, 16-8) to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference play.

Sonnett (9-8) struck out 11 and issued no walks to lead the Pirates to a 4-0 win in the first game. She also singled home the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Romag’s three-run, first-inning homer, the first of her career, sent the Pirates off and running to a 12-4 victory in the second game. Romag added an RBI single in the third, drew a bases-loaded walk in the in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.

•The Salt Lake Bruins (37-5, 33-3) rolled to a 4-2, 6-0 doubleheader sweep over the visiting North Idaho Cardinals (22-27, 17-18) in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.

Carly McKinnon had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals in the opener.

•Lauren Greer belted a two-run homer in the top of the second and Caitlin Noble made it stand up as the 23rd-ranked Washington Huskies (22-15, 4-6) eked out a 2-1 victory over the 10th-ranked UCLA Bruins (24-11, 5-5) in Pacific-10 Conference play in Westwood, Calif.

Noble (10-7) allowed six hits in a complete-game effort. The run she allowed came in the bottom of the fifth on a solo homer by Kristen Dedmon.

•Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (19-9, 15-3) rode the arms of Jessie LaPlante and Ashley Maier to a doubleheader sweep over Blue Mountain (11-18, 8-10) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play at Spokane Falls CC.

LaPlante overcame a four-walk first inning to post a 3-2 victory in the first game. LaPlante also drove in what proved to be the winning run with a single in the sixth.

Maier allowed just four hits in a 10-2 victory in the nightcap. Jessica Miles, who had a solo homer in the first game, hit a two-run homer and Stephanie Day added a three-run shot for CC Spokane.
