Forrest Duba reaches Eagle Scout rank

Forrest Duba recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout award. For his project Duba made an entrance sign on Appleway that points the way to the Dishman Hills Natural Area. Duba, a senior at University High School, is the son of David and Gail Duba of Veradale.

• Holly Brown of Cheney graduated magna cum laude from Washington State University in May with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

• Leslie-Louise Fowler of Spokane recently graduated from Southern Oregon University with a bachelor’s degree in English and writing.

• Two Spokane residents graduated recently from Carlton College in Minnesota.

Andrew Piston graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Piston is the son of Robert and Jane Piston of Spokane.

Konrad Patterson graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations. Patterson is the son of Thomas Patterson and Martyna Lowenhoff-Patterson of Spokane.

• Army Spec. Nathan Meyers recently graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Meyers, the son of Gary Meyers of Spokane, is a 1997 graduate of Bothell (Wash.) High School and a 2003 graduate of Eastern Washington University.

• The following area residents have been named to Gonzaga University’s dean’s list for the spring semester. They must achieve a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.69. Students are listed by their hometown.

• Amber Wood of Davenport, Wash., has been given the 2005 Inland Northwest Wildlife Scholarship Program’s Bob Panther Excellence Award. Wood has earned a $1,000 scholarship to Spokane Community College.

• Ferris High School student Emily Imhof has been named an Emerson Scholar and earned a full scholarship to attend the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. Only 53 Emerson Scholars earn that honor. The arts camp is for outstanding high school musicians. Applicants for the Emerson Scholar Award must submit a taped solo performance. Imhof, the daughter of Mark and Judy Harris, plays the flute.

• Christopher Short of Sandpoint recently graduated from Boise Bible College with a bachelor’s degree in Christian education.

• Harrison Grafos recently completed a master’s degree in public administration at New York University. Grafos is a 2002 graduate of Whitman College and a 1998 graduate of University High School.

• Several students from the Inland Northwest have earned National Scholar Athlete awards from the U.S. Army Reserve. The top male and female scholar-athletes from each school are recognized. Students are listed by high school.

• C.D. “Butch” Booker of Colfax placed second runner-up in the recent International Auctioneer Championship in Pittsburgh. The contest included 90 competitors, who were judged on the clarity, speed and rhythm of their chant in addition to their appearance, poise and eye contact with the crowd.

Idaho

• The University of Idaho’s twice-weekly student newspaper, The Argonaut, won first place in the nation in the Mark of Excellence Contest sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists. The paper won Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper in the five-state Northwest region in the spring to advance to the national competition.

In addition, University of Idaho student Frank McGovern received an award for best non-fiction magazine article for a story called “Tattle Tale” that ran in the University’s student magazine, The Blot.

Patrick Medina of Spokane earned the Charlie Parker Scholarship at Berklee College of Music.

He was nominated for the award by a faculty member.

Medina is a 2003 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

• Lake City High School’s Paul Banducci was selected to attend the recent LeadAmerica 2005 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Attendance at the leadership conference is by invitation.

• Two Post Falls residents have been awarded scholarships from the Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation. Bruce Martinson received a Touch the Future scholarship for $1,983. Jenai Senteio received a Kendall Family Scholarship for $1,983.

Kerry Costigan-Galdes of Spirit Lake, Idaho, has been named a U.S. National Award winner in art by the U.S. Achievement Academy. Costigan-Galdes, a student at Timblerlake High School, was nominated for the award by one of her teachers. She is the daughter of Cheryl Costigan of Spirit Lake and Russ Galdes of Spokane.

• Lauralyn McClelland graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in performing arts from Oklahoma City University this spring. McClelland, a 2001 graduate of Timberlake High School, is the daughter of Gail McClelland and the late Scott McClelland of Spirit Lake, Idaho. She is currently performing with the Musical Theatre of Wichita.

• Reika Chatfield recently graduated from Yakima Valley College with a degree in veterinary science technology. Chatfield, a 2000 graduate of Kellogg High School, is the daughter of Ray and Gail Chatfield of Rose Lake, Idaho. She is working as a veterinary technician at the Silver Valley Veterinary Clinic in Pinehurst, Idaho.
