Good deals on whole-grain foods

Marge Svenson King Features Syndicate

New dietary guidelines suggest that people should be eating more whole-grain foods, but it can be tough to get kids to eat foods that are good for them when they translate the term “nutritious” to “yucky.”

Here are two ideas to introduce more whole-grain foods into your children’s diet in ways they’re going to like — popcorn and rice cakes.

Popcorn and rice cakes are whole-grain foods that come in a variety of flavors, and you can do even more to make these two foods more appealing.

For instance, spread peanut butter on top of apple-cinnamon or chocolate crunch rice cakes. That’s a seriously good treat to pack in lunchboxes!

Popped corn (without the butter) has less than half the calories and fat of potato chips, plus you can spice up popcorn with hot sauce, Creole, Tex-Mex or Cajun seasonings, wasabi sauce or curry powder. All in all, popcorn is a much healthier after-school snack, not to mention that it contains a great deal of fiber.

Another way to increase the amount of whole-grain foods in your diet is to buy whole-grain cereals, breads, pasta, tortillas, muffins and crackers. Here are this week’s coupon savings:

Wonder how to find the coupons mentioned Coupon Cutter? Check coupon circulars in newspapers and the bulletin board at your grocery store. Some stores also offer coupons in displays scattered throughout the store. Ask the store manager if you’re looking for a particular coupon. Often a grocery store will honor the price break even if the coupon is from a competing store or pharmacy chain.
