South Beach Wraps pricey but palatable

Lorie Hutson Food editor

Lunchables aren’t just for kids anymore.

Kraft has wrapped up new lunches for adults who are watching what they eat in the South Beach Diet sandwich kits.

The lunches are designed to following the goals of cardiologist Arthur Agatston’s South Beach Diet, which encourages an eating plan lower in carbohydrates and fat. It emphasizes what Agatston calls the “right” carbs and fat, such as whole grains and canola and olive oils.

Each meal contains 250 calories or fewer and includes lean meats, low-fat cheeses, tortilla wraps and sauces or dressings. There is sugar-free Jell-O for dessert.

The finicky food panel tasters liked the box lunches well enough to give them three stars out of five for taste.

“Pretty darn good. Seems like a healthy meal, although the tortillas taste a little too healthy, if you know what I mean. I like it, though,” Matt Quesnell said of the Southwestern Style Chicken Wraps.

Nancy Robinson thought the package could have included a little bit more mayo, but otherwise she liked the Turkey and Bacon Club wraps. “Tasty, an adult lunchable; great flavor. The bacon bits are a nice touch,” she said.

Larry Inman said the meal would have left him searching for a main course.

“Tasty. I couldn’t make a meal out of it, but it would make a nice snack,” he said.

For the amount of food the packages delivered many tasters said the price tag was too high. Others simply did not like the taste of the wraps – at all.

“Cold, nasty, sharp, gone-over flavor to the cheese. Bad, bad salsa. Not a food,” Donald Clegg said of the Southwestern Style Chicken Wraps. He was a little more kind to the Turkey and Bacon Wraps, but not by much. “Even processed turkey and fake bacon bits are edible with mayo,” Clegg said. “Emergency use only, but (it) won’t gag you.”

The South Beach Diet sandwich wraps can be found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Kraft’s South Beach Diet line also includes frozen meals, frozen pizza, cereal, cereal bars, meal replacement bars and snacks.
