Area students receive Marine Corps grants

Two area students have won Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation grants.

Erica Foss of Spokane was awarded a $2,700 for her studies at the University of Denver.

Cassandra Ogohara of Spokane was awarded the $10,000 Berger Cornerstone Scholarship. She is currently attending the University of Washington. Ogohara is one of five recipients nationwide.

An original idea qualified Gonzaga University students Evan Castiglia, Ryan Leong and Drew Shemchuk for the semifinals of the Fortune Small Business competition in New York City early this month.

The competition involved 82 teams from 66 schools including Babson, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Georgia and Wharton. Eleven teams advanced to the semifinals.

In April, the Gonzaga trio won first place, along with $10,000, during the Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership Program at Gonzaga. Their winning plan, Original Lacrosse Co., is a sporting goods manufacturing and retail business.

• Several area students have won scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year at Washington State University.

Christopher Aldrich, a 2003 graduate of Ferris High School, receives a $1,500 Honors College Leff Family Education Abroad Scholarship. Aldrich, the son of Mary Beth and Roger Aldrich of Spokane, is studying pre-medicine.

Andrea Charette-Bluff, the daughter of Susan and Monte Bluff of Cusick, Wash., receives a $1,000 Creighton Endowment. She is a 2004 graduate of Cusick High School and is studying architecture and music.

Sean Collison, who is studying computer engineering, receives a $2,000 Verizon Electrical Engineering Scholarship. Collison, a 2003 graduate of University High School, is the son of Susan and Robert Collison of Veradale.

Sheila Doyle, a 2002 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, receives a $1,500 Honors College Leff Family Education Abroad Scholarship, $750 George Van Vleet Scholarship and a $500 M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Doyle, the daughter of Patricia and Dennis Doyle of Spokane, is studying zoology, art and Asian studies.

Esther Gaines, the daughter of Karen and Raymond Gaines of Spokane, receives a $1,400 Viola Quinn Scholarship, a $500 Virginia Shaw Scholarship and a $500 Helen G. Smith Scholarship. Gaines, who is studying health and fitness education, is a 2001 graduate of Christian Liberty Academy in Illinois.

Sara Hilliard, a 2003 graduate of the Oaks Academy, receives a $900 Honors College Beardsley Family Veterinary Medicine Scholarship and a $750 M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Hilliard, the daughter of Kathleen and Daniel Hilliard of Spokane, is studying pre-medicine.

Jessica Leyk, the daughter of Chris Schultz of Liberty Lake, receives a $1,000 Honors College M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Leyk, a 2002 graduate of Central Valley High School, is studying criminal justice and political science.

Cara Preuss, the daughter of Doree and Greg Preuss of Mead, receives a $1,700 Laurence J. Peter Memorial Scholarship in Teacher Education. Preuss is a graduate student studying education.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Sean Martin has graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. Martin, a 2003 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Rick Martin of Spokane and Tonia Peters of Nine Mile Falls.

• Army Pvt. Dominick White recently graduated from the chaplain assistant advanced individual training course at the Chaplain School at Fort Jackson, S.C. White is the son of Donald and Linda White of Spokane.

• Kelly Fuller of Spokane recently graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Master of Education in special education. Fuller is a 2000 graduate of Mead High School.

• Eric Cohen of Spokane recently graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York. Cohen earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Idaho

• Sabrine Krier of St. Maries was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Krier is studying drafting and design technology at North Idaho College.

• Estrella Atkinson of Coeur d’Alene was recently named Miss Teen of Idaho. Along with the title comes a $1,000 scholarship and a $500 savings bond. Atkinson, who attends Lake City High School, is the daughter of Leon and Loneita Atkinson.

• Piper Freeman, a 2001 graduate of Lake City High School, recently graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in film and television. She is the daughter of Tom and Patti Freeman of Post Falls.
