Two from EWU on Payton Award list

Quarterback Erik Meyer and wide receiver Eric Kimble of Eastern Washington University are among four Big Sky Conference football players selected to the first Walter Payton Award watch list, the Sports Network announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the top offensive player in Division I-AA.

Meyer was last year’s Big Sky offensive most valuable player and finished fourth in Payton voting. The three players who finished ahead of him have graduated.

Meyer completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 3,707 yards and 31 touchdowns last year. His top receiver, Kimble, had 83 catches for 1,453 yards and 19 TDs.

Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay and Montana running back Lex Hilliard are also on the Payton list.

“Former EWU assistant football coach Jerry Graybeal is among three finalists for the athletic director position at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

Graybeal, who coached Weber State from 1998-2004, has served as Weber’s interim A.D. since April.

The other finalists are Kenneth Beazer, the director of athletic development at Utah State the last four years who was a graduate assistant at Washington State in 1990-91, and Gregory Byrne, the associate athletic director for development and fund-raising at Kentucky from 2002-05.

Golf

Steve Prugh of Manito Golf and Country Club finished eighth at the Pacific Northwest PGA Club Professional Championship at Whitefish (Mont.) Lake Golf Course.

Prugh fired a third-round, 1-under-par 70 to finish at 1-under 212, 11 strokes behind champion Keith Coleman of Harbour Pointe Golf Club.

Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan tied for 11th at 215. Chris Curran of MeadowWood was another shot back and tied for 14th.
