U.S. team pounds Panama to open tourney
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Alex Scales scored 18 points and Jerome Beasley added 14 to lead the United States to a 94-72 win over Panama Wednesday in the opener of the Americas World Championship qualifying tournament.
Tournament favorite Brazil, led by Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa’s 31 points, toppled Venezuela 111-88. Argentina, playing without most of the stars from last year’s Athens Olympic gold squad, lost to Mexico 96-82. The Dominican Republic carved out a 72-69 win over Uruguay.
