Cruisin’ in 1988 Fiero

Greg Zyla King Features Syndicate

Q: I have a 1988 Pontiac Fiero. Is there a General Motors tape, CD and AM/FM player that can replace my cassette player? It has the powered base, and I’d like the swap to be straightforward and have all mountings mate up. Also, I would like leather seats. Mine are gray cloth with the powered lumbar support. I’m good with wrenches but not so good at a lot of modifying, so I need buckets that will mate right up with no problem. Thanks. — Phil

A: Phil, I checked with my friends over at B&L Buick-Pontiac-Chevy in Shamokin, Pa., and they’ve just informed me that General Motors does not make a direct replacement CD/AM/FM/cassette player for your Fiero. In 1988, Fiero offered a CB radio, but no CD player. However, if you visit your local auto-parts store or car audio dealer, you might find a unit that won’t be too much trouble to install (I know that’s not what you really want to hear).

Another option is to hang a CD player somewhere else in your car in addition to the unit you have. As for the leather buckets, perhaps you can find some leather units from a Fiero GT at the junkyard that will fit your car.
