Hyte’s overtime goal carries Cougars past Vandals

Megan Hyte scored a goal with 1:19 remaining in overtime to lift the Washington State Cougars to a 1-0 non-conference women’s soccer victory over the Idaho Vandals on Sunday at Guy Wicks Field in Moscow.

Goalkeeper Katie Hultin had six saves to earn the shutout for the Cougars (2-0).

Keeper Lindsay Smith stopped nine shots on goal for Idaho.

The match was the Vandals’ opener.

•The Gonzaga Bulldogs are off to the best start in school history after blanking the Idaho State Bengals 2-0 in non-conference play at Davis Field in Pocatello.

Gonzaga got a goal from Cristin Leverson in the eighth minute, and Christine Soma in the 14th minute to run their record to 2-0. Soma also picked up an assist on Leverson’s score.

Gonzaga keeper Ashley Haugen made one save en route to her 13th career shutout.

Maren Eves made two saves in goal for the Bengals (0-2).

•Jodie Taylor scored a pair of penalty-kick goals to lead the Oregon State Beavers (2-0) to a 2-0 victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-2) at the Oregon Classic in Eugene.

Oregon State outshot Eastern 30-4 on the day.

Volleyball

The Washington State Cougars opened their season with a 27-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-20 non-conference win over the Portland Pilots at the Chiles Center in Portland.

Natalia Owens paced WSU with 14 kills and a match-high six blocks. Teammate Jen Barcus added 13 kills and four blocks.

Golf

Colville’s Kent Brown finished second at the PNGA Senior Men’s Amateur Public Links tournament at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent, Wash.

Brown carded a two-round total of 7-over-par 149 to finish one stroke behind winner Jim Gibbons of Wilsonville, Ore.

Karl Ota of Spokane finished 11th with a 160 total.

•Spokane’s Scott Adams was the top local finisher in the PNGA Men’s Amateur Public Links, held at the same course.

Adams finished 15th with a two-round total of 152.

Bob Burton of Everett, Wash., won the tourney with a 6-under 138 score.
