Go-GURT tasty but a little pricey

Lorie Hutson Food editor

The makers of portable yogurt have made it gulpable.

Go-GURT inventor Yoplait has turned its handheld yogurt into smoothies, so kids don’t even have to slow down for a snack.

The adults on our back-to-school food panel were intrigued by the innovation.

“Wow. Yogurt you drink? Weird, yet oddly appealing,” Donald Clegg said. “You could pretend to be an astronaut while drinking it.”

Laura Hollman was a little more skeptical. “You know the idea of drinking yogurt just doesn’t sit well with me. This product tastes vaguely like blueberries. How hard is it to eat yogurt?” she wondered.

Skip Hubbard liked the flavor of the drinks. “Great taste, awful appearance. Where do they get these colors?”

The children on our panel didn’t skip a beat when we served them the smoothies. They were more intrigued by the neon blue and pink of the drinks than anything else.

“Yum. I can’t get enough of this stuff,” said Drew Kazanis, 7.

Nine-year-old Sydney Williams was unimpressed. “Very dull,” she said of the Wild Berry flavor.

Both kids and adults agreed the Wild Berry was the tastier smoothie. Kids gave it four stars out of five for taste. The adults on our panel ranked it slightly lower, giving it three and a half stars.

Both kids and adults gave the Paradise Punch just two and a half stars. Almost everyone had trouble figuring out what flavor the punch was supposed to taste like.

“Tastes like cherries,” said Katie Kazanis, 5.

“It tastes like strawberry yogurt,” said 11-year-old Stephen Gese. Fourteen-year-old Daniele Tavenner also guessed strawberries.

Among the adults, Marcia Oranen couldn’t decide on a flavor. “Indistinguishable pink flavor. Bubble gum or strawberry?”

Hollman also guessed the flavor was bubblegum. Clegg listed blueberry and cherry among his guesses.

Parents might look at the yogurt smoothies as an easy way to pack protein and calcium into a little one’s lunch. The smoothies also have 20 grams of sugar each. But what really bothered the adults on our tasting panel was the price of Go-GURT Smoothies. Many said it was simply too much to spend $3.97 on four small smoothies.

“I’ll settle for a good, cold glass of milk any day and you can buy a gallon on sale for $2.” Marilyn Moore said.
