Moore scores 16; WSU women improve to 5-1

Keisha Moore scored 16 points and hit 10 of 11 free throws as Washington State defeated Cal State Northridge 68-55 on Friday night in non-conference women’s basketball at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.

Moore, who shot 3 of 6 from the field, also had nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals to lead the Cougars (5-1). Kate Benz added nine points and nine rebounds.

Krisztina Fuleki led the Matadors (1-6) with 19 points, but she shot just 1 of 8 from 3-point range.

•Stephanie Hawk scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds as Gonzaga snapped a four-game losing streak with a 92-68 rout of Northwestern State in the first round of the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev.

Anne Bailey added 14 points and Sasha Polishchuck 10 for the Bulldogs (2-5), who will face Northern Colorado in today’s championship game.

Sheronda Bell scored 25 to lead the Demons (4-2), who will face host Nevada in the consolation game.

•Sophia Young had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 5 Baylor to an 81-74 win over Washington in Waco, Texas.

Abiola Wabara added 14 points and Angela Tisdale 10 as the Bears (7-0) extended their winning streak to 27 games.

Baylor led 59-48 with 12 minutes left before going on a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 69-50. Wabara had four points in the run.

Cameo Hicks led Washington (5-1) with 15 points, and Dominique Banks and Jill Bell each scored 11.

•Kim Leith scored 12 points and Katy Campbell added 11 as George Fox defeated Whitworth 58-42 in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams at Newberg, Ore.

Tiffany Schmidt added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Bruins (5-0, 1-0), who won despite hitting just 2 of their 24 3-point attempts.

Meghan Beauchamp had 12 points and five rebounds for the Pirates (3-2, 0-1), who shot 6 of 26 from 3-point range and 15 of 53 (28 percent) from the field.

•Abby Hatten scored 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 54-47 victory over Peninsula in the first round of the Everett Tournament.

Ali Middlestadt added eight points and six rebounds for the Sasquatch (3-2), who shot 13 of 19 (68 percent) in the second half after scoring just 18 points in the first.

Denise Kerns scored 12 points on four 3-pointers to lead the Pirates (2-3), who shot 29 percent in the game.

Men’s basketball

Scott Szaley had 17 points and 19 rebounds as George Fox (3-1, 1-0) overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Whitworth 77-69 in overtime in the NWC opener for both teams at Newberg, Ore.

Lance Pecht and Jon Young each scored 15 points to lead the Pirates (2-2, 0-1).

Volleyball

Christal Morrison had 15 kills to lead third-seeded Washington to a 30-21, 30-17, 30-18 sweep of Siena in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament at Fort Collins, Colo.

Courtney Thompson added 38 assists for the Huskies (27-1), who outhit the Saints (20-12) .287 to .118.

Washington will face host Colorado State, which defeated Colorado 3-1, in today’s second-round match.

Wrestling

North Idaho sits in 35th place after the first day of the 52-team Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

Jeff Hedges (3-1) remains in the 125-pound consolation bracket after reeling off three straight victories, finishing his day with a 5-3 decision over Jeff Sato of Columbia University.
