Lafayette powers Houston past No. 15 Arizona

Oliver Lafayette scored 28 points and Houston recorded its second straight upset of a Top 25 team, beating No. 15 Arizona 69-65 on Saturday night in Houston.

Jahmar Thorpe added 13 points and Lanny Smith had 11 assists for the Cougars (3-1), who beat No. 25 LSU 84-83 on Tuesday. The Wildcats (2-3) were the highest-ranked team to lose to Houston since the Cougars upset third-ranked Memphis 69-67 in 1996.

Hassan Adams came back from an early benching to score 21 for the sloppy Wildcats, who committed 21 turnovers and shot 35 percent (22 of 63) from the floor.

The Wildcats were awful on offense at the start, missing 16 of their first 17 shots and committing nine turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

Oregon State 69, UNLV 63: Marcel Jones tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Beavers (2-2) past the Rebels (2-3) in Corvallis, Ore.

The Beavers overcame a 22-point first-half deficit and forced the Rebels into a 4-for-31 shooting performance in the second half.

Georgetown 71, Oregon 57: Ashanti Cook scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Hoyas (3-1) to a win over the Ducks (4-2) in the Hispanic College Fund Classic in Eugene, Ore.

Malik Hairston scored 17 to pace Oregon.

USC 74, BYU 68: Gabe Pruitt scored 17 points and Nick Young added 14 to lead the Trojans (4-2) over the Cougars (3-2) in Los Angeles.

Freshman center Trent Plaisted posted a career-high 20 points to lead BYU, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped.

California 89, Akron 75: Leon Powe scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to guide the Golden Bears (5-1) past the Zips (2-1) in Berkeley, Calif.

Cal has won five straight games.
