Whits land three on all-region football team

Three Whitworth football players were named to the D3football.com 2005 All-West Region team.

Tight end Michael Allan and defensive back Ryan Marshall were first-team selections and defensive lineman Austin Richard received third-team honors.

Allan set a Whitworth single-season record for touchdown receptions with 15 and led the Northwest Conference in yards per catch with a 19.2 average. Marshall led the conference with six interceptions and Richard had 40 tackles, including six for losses.

Women’s basketball

Emily Wittkopf missed a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired, and Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch fell at home to the Salt Lake Bruins 48-45 in a non-conference game.

CCS made only 31 percent of its field goals to the Bruins’ 38 percent as both teams struggled from the field. Sarah Scates hit 7 of 8 free throws and led the Sasquatch (5-4) with nine points.

• The Washington Huskies bounced back from their first two losses of the season last week to defeat the Michigan Wolverines 82-60 behind 17 points from both Cameo Hicks and Kristen O’Neill.

The Huskies (6-2) led by as many as 19 points in the second half, using a balanced offensive attack in which 11 players scored. Ta’Shia Walker led Michigan (4-5) with 17 points.

Volleyball

The No. 3-seeded Washington Huskies (29-1) defeated the No. 14 Purdue Boilermakers (24-9) in three sets in the NCAA Regional Semifinal in College Station, Texas.

Washington had four players reach double-digit kills, led by Christal Morrison with 19. Pac-10 Player of the Year Sanja Tomasevic had 14.

The Huskies will face No. 11 Wisconsin in an Elite Eight match at 3 p.m. today.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves (14-11-4) defeated the visiting Beaver Valley Nitehawks (20-8-2) 5-3 in a KIJHL matchup. Lief Sherman and Brandon Lassiter each recorded a goal and an assist and Evan Witt contributed three assists for the Braves.

• The Spokane Flyers (14-15) gave up four third-period goals and fell 6-4 at home to the Queen City Cutthroats (18-6). David Norling notched 44 saves for the Flyers, who had four different goal scorers. Robie Knott recorded a hat trick for the Cutthroats.

Wrestling

North Idaho College (6-0) won seven of 10 matches to defeat Northwest Wyoming 27-12 in a non-conference match. At 141 pounds, Heinrich Barnes pinned Ross Montour with 13 seconds left in the second round for the Cardinals.
