Shedd’s Spread offers tasty new blends

Lorie Hutson Food editor

Shedd’s Spread hit a high note with one of hits new limited edition margarines.

Spokesman-Review food panel tasters liked the honey in the new whipped margarine. They even liked the cinnamon. But most said, “No, thanks,” to the pumpkin spice spread.

“Splendid spread – worth the price. Heavenly honey bread,” said Andy Hoye.

Vicki Deschaine agreed. “The honey butter is nice and sweet. I’d buy it.”

The panel gave it four stars for flavor. Skip Hubbard said the honey spread is a nice compromise for parents and their little ones. “Kids love honey on their bread, but Mom and Dad fear it. This successfully pleases everybody – no mess and plenty of great taste.”

But as much as he liked the honey spread, the pumpkin flavor received a serious thumbs down. “(It) leaves a nasty aftertaste resembling cough syrup and mouthwash. They missed the mark here,” Hubbard said.

Peggy Kazanis added, “Pumpkins are for pies not spreads. It’s a crazy color and manufactured flavor.”

Visiting food panel taster Rachel Powell wasn’t sure about the pumpkin flavor “(I) can’t figure out what it is supposed to taste like, but it’s not good,” she said.

Deschaine was not impressed at all. “Absolutely horrible,” she said. It received just 1 1/2 stars.

Tina Johnson was the only one who liked it.

“Apparently I’m alone on my opinion of this. It’s good, but it’s also useless,” said Tina Johnson.

The cinnamon spread received mixed reviews, although tasters liked it enough to give it three and a half stars overall. Many said they liked the cinnamon-toast flavor. Others said they’ll stick with sprinkling cinnamon and sugar on the butter or margarine like they’ve always done.
