Farmar scores 21 as No. 14 UCLA holds off late rally by Michigan

Jordan Farmar had 21 points, Arron Afflalo scored 20 and No. 14 UCLA held off a late rally to beat Michigan 68-61 Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Bruins (8-1) are off to their best start since the 1997-98 season. The Wolverines fell to 7-1.

UCLA rallied to take a 63-50 lead with 4:35 left, but Michigan then scored nine straight points. Afflalo’s steal and short pass to Luc Richard Mbah a Moute for a layup gave the Bruins a 65-59 lead, and some breathing room, with 1:23 left.

Michigan reserve Chris Hunter had 15 points, Dion Harris scored 14 and Lester Abram added 12.

Afflalo had 17 of his 20 points in the first half, helping UCLA lead by as many as seven points. Farmar had 15 of his 21 after halftime, keying a 31-12 run in the second half.

(22) Iowa 62, Arizona State 43: At Iowa City, Iowa, Adam Haluska scored 17 points and the Hawkeyes held Arizona State to season lows in points and field goal percentage.

Haluska was 4 of 8 from the field and hit all six free throws to help the Hawkeyes (8-3) snap a two-game losing streak. Greg Brunner had 12 points and 15 rebounds and Mike Henderson added 10 points.

Kevin Kruger had 12 points for the Sun Devils (4-3), who shot 34 percent and made 3 of 13 3-point attempts.

(24) Arizona 73, Utah 43: At Salt Lake City, Hassan Adams scored 27 points and Chris Rodgers added 13 to give Arizona its first three-game win streak of the season.

The Wildcats (5-3) shot 48 percent, forced 24 turnovers and blocked seven shots while beating the Utes (5-3) for the second straight season.

Oregon State 64, Georgia 60: At Portland, Chris Stephens had 25 points and hit 8 of 8 free throws down the stretch to lead the Beavers past the Bulldogs.

Nick DeWitz had nine of his 14 points in the first half for the Beavers (4-3). Levi Stukes scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs (7-2), whose seven-game win streak was snapped.

New Mexico 68, Oregon 61: At Albuquerque, N.M., David Chiotti scored 18 points and freshman point guard Ryan Kersten added 14 in his first start to lead the Lobos past the Ducks.

Mark Walters had 14 points and seven assists, and Kellen Walter scored 12 points on four 3-pointers for the Lobos (6-3). Malik Hairston led the Ducks (5-4) with 16 points.
