Pirates cruise past Banana Slugs

Five Pirates scored in double digits as Whitworth’s basketball team cruised past UC Santa Cruz 84-54 Saturday at the St. Vincent de Paul Invitational at Burlingame, Calif.

Kevin Hasenfus led the way with 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Pirates (4-2), who outrebounded the Banana Slugs (1-9) 48-21 including a 20-5 edge on the offensive glass.

The Pirates will face Cal Lutheran today at 3 p.m. in the tournament’s championship game.

•Riley Luettgerodt had 36 points and nine rebounds, both game highs, as Chemeketa held off Community Colleges of Spokane 84-79 at the Northwestern Athletic Association of Community Colleges Crossover Tournament in Longview, Wash.

Erik Bell had 22 points and Humberto Perez 17 for the CCS (8-2).
