Cyr stops 27 shots to lead PG to win
PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia – Real Cyr stopped 27 shots for his second consecutive shutout, leading the Prince George Cougars to a 3-0 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League action Tuesday.
Colin Patterson opened the scoring for Prince George with a rebound goal at 17 minutes, 25 seconds of the first period. Ty Wishart’s shot deflected off the left post and Patterson was in front of the net to claim the carom and score the first goal of the game.
After a scoreless second period, Devin Featherstone would make it 2-0 for Prince George with a short-handed goal at 9:49 of the third period. Featherstone took control of a loose puck in the Cougars’ end of the ice and brought the puck into the Spokane zone. While attempting to cross the ice from right-to-left in front of Spokane goalie Jim Watt, the left-handed Featherstone lost control of the puck only to have it slip between Watt’s pads for the score.
With Watt pulled for an extra skater, Jared Walker put the game away for Prince George (20-14-0-3) with an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
Watt faced 21 shots in goal for Spokane (15-18-1-0), which was shut out for the fourth time this season. The Chiefs have lost three games in a row. However, Spokane – despite the loss – didn’t lose any ground in the U.S. Division standings after the Kamloops Blazers defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 Tuesday night at Seattle.
Everett (21-14-1-0) remains in first place in the U.S. Division with 43 points. Portland (15-14-1-2) is second with 33, followed by Seattle 14-18-1-3) with 32 and Spokane with 31, one point ahead of fifth-place Tri-City (13-14-3-1).
