No. 11 Bruins finally discover a way past Cardinal

Arron Afflalo scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half and No. 11 UCLA beat Stanford 71-54 on Thursday night, snapping two losing streaks to the Cardinal in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams at Los Angeles.

The Bruins (11-1) had lost eight straight at home to Stanford (4-5) and six in a row overall. The win was the eighth straight for UCLA, which is off to its best start since the national championship season of 1994-95.

UCLA opened with an 18-1 run, capped by a jumper from Ryan Wright with 14:23 to play. Stanford never got back within single digits.

The Cardinal missed their first 12 shots from the field.

Leon Powe had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Ayinde Ubaka scored seven of his nine points in the final 4:53 as the Golden Bears beat the Trojans at Los Angeles in the Pac-10 opener for both schools.

Richard Midgley and Omar Wilkes each had 11 points for the Golden Bears (6-4), which never trailed in the game while winning on the road for the first time in four tries this season. It’s the first time they won a conference opener on the road since 1982 against Stanford.

Nick Young and Loderick Stewart each scored 16 points and Gabe Pruitt added 13 for the Trojans (9-3).
