Young’s late 3 gives Pirates overtime win

Jon Young’s 3-pointer from the left wing with 6 seconds left gave Whitworth a 76-73 overtime victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in the first round of the CLU Thrivent Financial tournament Thursday night in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Young and George Tucker each scored 18 points to lead the Pirates (6-2), who trailed by nine points with 2 minutes to play. Kevin Hasenfus added 15 points and 16 rebounds, and Bryan Williams dished out 12 assists.

Whitworth will play Luther in the championship game tonight.

•Mt. Spokane graduate Mike Dorr scored 22 points and hit 4 of 7 3-point attempts as Highline defeated the Community Colleges of Spokane 73-70 in the Bigfoot Classic at Spokane Community College.

Dorr shot 8 of 13 from the field, and Zach Bruce added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Thunderbirds. Jordan Hammond led the Sasquatch (10-3) with 17 points.
