Senators roar back from 3-1 deficit to sink Islanders

Bryan Smolinski scored with 1 minute, 46 seconds left in the third period Friday night to give the Ottawa Senators a 4-3 comeback win over the New York Islanders at Ottawa.

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson scored his 25th goal in the first period before leaving with a rib injury in the second after he was hit by Zdeno Chara’s slap shot.

Trailing 3-1, Ottawa came back on Dany Heatley’s 25th goal late in the second and Peter Schaefer’s tying goal 4:06 into the third.

Sharks 5, Avalanche 2: At San Jose, Calif., Joe Thornton scored twice and Scott Thornton added a goal to help San Jose defeat Colorado and end a four-game losing streak.

Oilers 4, Predators 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, Ryan Smyth scored on a penalty shot to help Edmonton beat Nashville.

Shawn Horcoff, Jason Smith and Jarret Stoll also scored for Edmonton.

Blue Jackets 3, Blackhawks 2: At Chicago, Rick Nash and Nikolai Zherdev each had a goal and an assist to help Columbus beat Chicago for its third straight win.

Sabres 4, Thrashers 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Ryan Miller made 34 saves and Chris Drury added a goal and an assist to lift Buffalo past Atlanta. Miller has won all four of his starts since returning from a broken thumb.

Panthers 2, Canadiens 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Joe Nieuwendyk scored twice and Roberto Luongo stopped Alex Kovalev’s late penalty shot to preserve Florida’s win over Montreal.

Bruins 2, Lightning 1: At Tampa, Fla., Patrice Bergeron scored a tiebreaking goal with 11:49 left and Hannu Toivonen made 31 saves to help Boston beat Tampa Bay.

Chicago acquired right wing Radim Vrbata, 24, from Carolina for future considerations. … Buffalo center Daniel Briere has been diagnosed with a sports hernia and will have surgery in Montreal early next week. … The New York Islanders lost goalie Rick DiPietro (knee) and defenseman Alexei Zhitnik (shoulder) to injuries during their night game at Ottawa. … St. Louis claimed forward Vladimir Orszagh off waivers from Lulea of the Swedish Elite League.
