Wolfpack hand Colonials first loss of season

Cameron Bennerman led five players in double figures with 17 points and No. 19 North Carolina State defeated No. 12 George Washington 79-58 Friday at Raleigh, N.C.

It was the first loss of the season for the Colonials, who had won their first eight games.

Cedric Simmons had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks and point guard Engin Atsur tied a career high with nine assists for N.C. State (11-1), which gave coach Herb Sendek the best start of his nine-year tenure.

Carl Elliott had 14 points for the Colonials, who shot a season-worst 31 percent.

(2) Connecticut 111, Quinnipiac 75: Hilton Armstrong scored a career-high 26 points and Craig Austrie set a Connecticut freshman record with 14 assists to lead the Huskies (11-0) past the Bobcats (5-5) at Hartford, Conn.

(4) Memphis 90 Purdue 70: At Memphis, Tenn., Joey Dorsey had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers (11-1) past the Boilermakers (6-5) for their eighth straight victory.

(5) Florida 84, Florida A&M 47: Joakim Noah scored 18 points and Chris Richard had 13 points and nine rebounds as the Gators (12-0) extended the best start in school history by defeating the Rattlers (4-8) at Gainesville, Fla.

(6) Illinois 84, Tennessee-Martin 46: Rich McBride scored 21 points, all on 3-pointers, as the Fighting Illini (14-0) won their 14th straight game and finished their non-conference schedule undefeated for the second straight season, defeating the Skyhawks (5-5) at Champaign, Ill.

(15) Texas 110, Prairie View A&M 38: Brad Buckman returned after missing two games with a knee injury and scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Longhorns (10-2) past the Panthers (3-7) at Austin, Texas.

(18) Kentucky 71, Ohio 63: Joe Crawford scored 23 points and Ramel Bradley added 16 as the Wildcats (9-3) beat the Bobcats (6-2) in their annual trek across the Ohio River to Cincinnati.

(22) Wake Forest 87, Charleston Southern 47: Shamaine Dukes had 11 points and tied Wake Forest’s freshman record with 10 assists in his first start and the Demon Deacons (10-2) defeated the Buccaneers (5-6) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

(25) West Virginia 80, Canisius 68: Kevin Pittsnogle scored a career-high 34 points and the Mountaineers (8-3) defeated the Golden Griffins (1-8) at Morgantown, W.Va.
