Lake City quarterback Widmyer signs letter to play at Wofford

The Spokesman-Review

Ben Widmyer will stay in the “T” family, going from a Timberwolf to a Terrier next year.

The Lake City High quarterback signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend Wofford College, an NCAA Division I-AA school in Spartanburg, S.C.

Wofford plays in the Southern Conference, which includes I-AA notables Georgia Southern and Furman. Wofford captured a conference title in 2003 and advanced to the I-AA semifinals.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Widmyer took a trip to Spartanburg in early December. He gave an oral commitment two weeks later.

Widmyer said he chose Wofford because it features an option-based offense similar to LC.

“I have a chance to compete for a job and play right away,” Widmyer said last month.

Widmyer rewrote LC’s record book. He finished with a record 5,488 career yards as a two-year starter. Of the total, 4,108 yards and 30 touchdowns came through the air and 1,380 and 24 TDs came on the ground.

He was named the Inland Empire League’s offensive most valuable player last fall when he passed for 1,877 yards and 14 TDs and rushed for 827 and 12 TDs. He set the single-season record for completion percentage (63.8) as a junior.

According to information released by Wofford, Widmyer was listed as the No. 5 in-state prospect by Scout.com. He was the lone QB among 19 high school signees at Wofford.

Widmyer said he received recruiting interest from the Naval Academy, Idaho, Boise State and Idaho State.
