University sends 16 to semifinals

Greater Spokane League champion University established its dominance Friday during the opening day of the District 8 4A wrestling tournament at Mt. Spokane.

The Titans sent 16 wrestlers into today’s semifinals while piling up 168 team points. U-Hi claimed two semifinal spots at 119, 145, 160, 171 and 275 pounds.

Second-place Central Valley (111 points) claimed 12 spots in the semifinals, while third-place Mead (85) took seven semifinal berths.

In the two biggest upsets, CV’s Nick Walker edged second-seeded Dane Erickson of Lewis and Clark 9-7 at 145; and U-Hi’s Andrew Peterson (160) nipped second-seeded Logan Steele of Shadle Park 4-3.

The meet continues today at 10 a.m.

Knights ride to front

Host East Valley took a big lead in the team race after the first day of the two-day tournament. The Knights scored 161 1/2 points to easily outdistance runner-up Sunnyside (92) in the 12-team field. EV pushed through 13 wrestlers into today’s semifinals, which begin at 10 a.m. GSL wrestlers captured three of four semifinal spots at 130 and 152. West Valley-Spokane’s Seth Koker upset Mid-Valley top-seeded Tyler McGee 16-7 at 130; EV’s Andrew Beaudoin topped GSL No. 1 Jonah Hocum of Clarkston 18-6 at 145; and EV’s Clete Hanson pinned M-V No. 1 Jordan Fallwell of Ellensburg at 152.

Great Northern League

Tie goes to Colville

Based on the criteria tiebreaker, Colville (4-2) defeated host Riverside (3-3) in a season-ending meet that finished tied at 39. The Rams lost the tiebreaker because they were assessed a penalty point (biting) that they disputed. Riverside seniors Danny Moody (135) and Ray Hodge (140) ended the evening with pins that tied the score at 39. League teams compete at district next weekend.
